Choosing Locations for Meshtastic Infrastructure

The best Meshtastic site is not automatically the highest mountain or tallest building. A useful location combines radio visibility, access to users, legal permission, dependable power, safe mounting and realistic maintenance. Site selection should compare the total value of each candidate rather than one impressive coverage prediction.

Radio visibility comes first

LoRa benefits greatly from clear paths. Use topographic maps, elevation profiles and viewshed tools to shortlist sites. Check whether ridges, nearby buildings or terrain shoulders obstruct the first part of the path. A low obstruction near the antenna can matter more than a distant hill.

Prediction tools cannot fully model trees, reinforced concrete, local interference, antenna patterns or poor feed lines. Follow desktop study with temporary field testing.

Height must serve the intended users

A summit can see another summit while failing to reach people deep in the valley below. A high-gain vertical may concentrate energy near the horizon and create a weak area beneath the site. If the purpose is public access, test from streets, homes and trails—not only from other infrastructure locations.

Sometimes two medium-height sites on opposite sides of a town provide better handheld service and redundancy than one spectacular distant peak.

Evaluate the complete site

Common site types

Private roofs are accessible and often powered, but exact locations may need privacy. Apartment blocks and offices offer height but require formal permission and careful cable routing. Farms and rural properties can overlook valleys and provide engaged hosts. Hotels, mountain huts and restaurants may combine elevation, power and internet, although ownership and seasonal operation must be clear.

Radio towers and telecommunications sites offer excellent infrastructure but require professional installation, electromagnetic compatibility review and stricter access. Remote summits may provide broad coverage but impose the hardest solar, weather, lightning and maintenance requirements.

Keep the radio close to the antenna

Long thin coaxial cable can erase much of the advantage of a high site. Prefer a short low-loss feed line, place the weatherproof radio enclosure near the antenna, or use an appropriately engineered remote-power/data arrangement. Waterproof connectors, provide strain relief and use a drip loop.

Antenna polarization should match normal vertical Meshtastic devices. Choose the pattern for the job: omnidirectional coverage for a community, or a directional antenna for a deliberate corridor or backbone path. Include antenna gain when checking legal ERP or EIRP limits.

Test both directions and over time

Place a temporary node at the proposed antenna height and test from representative points. Log successful and missed packets, RSSI, SNR and weather. Drive or walk the service area with normal user equipment. Repeat important paths rather than relying on one packet.

Use Meshtastic’s Range Test module for controlled tests, then turn its sender interval off. Traceroute can help reveal the first observed route, but managed flooding means packets may take more than one path.

Prefer maintainable excellence

A site that gains a few decibels but requires an expedition after every reset may be a poor community asset. Score candidates on coverage, resilience, cost, permission, access and host commitment. The best public-network location is often the best compromise, not the theoretical RF maximum.

Obtain clear permission

Document the equipment, antenna, mounting method, cable path, power consumption, responsible contact, access procedure and removal terms. Do not climb, drill, connect to building power or attach to existing towers without authorization. Follow local building, electrical, grounding and radio rules and use qualified installers where required.

Protect hosts and the public record

Publish an approximate location when an exact private-site coordinate creates security or privacy concerns. The operational team should retain precise coordinates, access notes and host contact details in a restricted record. Never publish administrator keys or photographs that expose locks and access controls.
